Educational Tours

Our unique educational tours offer students a memorable hands-on living history field trip.  Educators can choose from our 1860s Home Front, Native American, or Battle of Jonesboro Tours.  Each of these school programs meet curriculum based requirements in Georgia Studies and American History.  School tours run Monday to Friday.

1860s Home Front Tour

Imagine yourself living in 1864 when the menfolk were absent from the home, fighting in the Civil War.  The women and children remained on the home front, fighting battles of their own.  This tour consists of the first hand accounts of the heroic people left behind at Stately Oaks.  Students have the opportunity to pitch in with daily chores, dress in 1860s clothing, play games and even help the war effort.

Native American Tour

The Creek Indian lived on Clayton County lands long before they were settled by colonists.  The Creek people honored the Owala, or The Old One Who Is the Keeper of the Tales.  During this tour, an Owala will lead students through the recreated Native American Village at Stately Oaks.  The Students will learn and participate in how Native American children prepared food, clothing and tools for survival.

Battle of Jonesboro Tour

The Battle of Jonesboro was the last battle in the Atlanta Campaign and led to the fall of Atlanta.  More that 600 Confederate casualties from this battle are buried in the Cleburne Cemetery in mostly unmarked graves.  Students reenact the skirmish on a battlefield marked with modern locations.  Students can visualize the relative size of the opposing army and corresponding casualties as the march to battle following scripted narration.
