Interactive Student Program at
Stately Oaks Historical Community |
 |
As a participating member in Clayton County's Partners in Education program, we know the importance of working closely with schools and the community. We offer school groups an educational opportunity for hands-on experience of home life during the Civil War. The wartime lack of resources combined with the absence of able-bodied menfolk forced those who remained to manage their homes and families under the worst of conditions, while maintaining their dignity and grace.
Each student group will be accompanied by knowledgeable and period-attired educators who will escort and lead you on an interactive learning experience. Students will tour the 1839 house and hear the true stories (from the poignant to the comical) of the McCord family who lived in the house during the war. Chores will need to be done: toting the firewood, scrubbing the iron cookware, gathering eggs, hanging out the laundry, and fetching water.
Students and teachers have the opportunity to step inside the historical experience, even donning the clothing of the period. Girls can refine their skills at the womanly art of the hoop skirt, while boys try on the required hats and coats of gentlemen of the day. When the work is done, you'll even have the chance for relaxation and recreation with some of the popular games of the era.
Conclude your visit with a stop by Juddy's Country Store, where you may purchase snacks, drinks, and period souvenirs. Feel free to bring your lunches and enjoy a leisurely outdoor picnic in the park immediately adjacent to the Stately Oaks Historic Community.
