Volunteer Tour Guides/Docents:
Share the history of this historic community with visitors from all around the world at beautiful antebellum Stately Oaks Plantation in Jonesboro, GA where Scarlett O’Hara paid the taxes on Tara! Here's a chance to work in a setting steeped in Margaret Mitchell’s famous novel Gone With the Wind. Learn about your heritage and share your excitement with an interested public. We will give you the tools to become a knowledgeable and gracious interpreter of the past (19 years or older). Volunteers contribute to the success of Historic Stately Oaks Plantation and community in many ways. Help can be provided to acquire a period correct costume necessary for conducting tours.
Costumed tour guides conduct Saturday tours as well as all scheduled group tours.

Junior Docents: Junior tour guides must be 13-18 years old and sponsored by an experienced tour guide or docent. Junior guides must attend monthly training and be willing to follow Victorian etiquette as well as acquire an appropriate costume, learn the house information, and assist with tours.

School Tour Interpreters: This job involves making history come alive during school tours for children in elementary and middle grades. Interpreters guide small groups of children through activities such as churning butter, doing chores, shooting blowguns and playing games. Although some positions require skilled crafters, artisans or woodsmen, necessary information for some can be taught in a few minutes. If you enjoy working with children in an interactive setting, you would be a perfect volunteer for school tours. The commitment for this position is usually from 9:30-12:30 on an occasional weekday.

Volunteer Interpreters: Volunteer Interpreters help connect our visitors to the past. As a volunteer interpreter (18 years or older) you will be trained to conduct CD tours of Stately Oaks Plantation and be involved in both educational and outreach programming. No costume is required. Volunteer any day Monday – Friday.

Training is available for all new volunteers. For more information on the benefits of becoming a volunteer, please call us at (770) 473-0197.
